The Windows 10 Deadline Is Coming: What Businesses Must Do Now
Home 9 Network Security 9 The Windows 10 Deadline Is Coming: What Businesses Must Do Now

Microsoft is officially ending support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025.

Yes, your PC will still turn on the next morning. But here’s the catch: Microsoft will stop providing the behind-the-scenes protections and updates that keep your business safe, secure, and compliant. That means no more:

  • Security patches to block hackers
  • Technical support from Microsoft
  • Updates to keep your software running smoothly
  • And for businesses, that’s a big deal.

Why Windows 10 End of Life Matters for Business Owners

  1. Cybersecurity Risks

No updates = open doors for hackers. Outdated systems are prime targets for ransomware, phishing, and data breaches. If client or patient data is on those machines, you’re essentially leaving the vault unlocked.

  1. Software Headaches

Many applications are updated to work with the latest operating systems. As Windows 10 reaches its end of life, expect more frequent glitches, performance slowdowns, and even programs that stop working altogether.

  1. Compliance Red Flags

If you’re in healthcare, finance, legal, or any regulated industry, running an unsupported operating system could land you in violation of HIPAA, PCI, or other compliance requirements, leading to fines, audits, or worse.

What Are Your Options for Upgrading from Windows 10?

Not every PC running Windows 10 can be upgraded to Windows 11. Microsoft introduced stricter hardware requirements for Windows 11. If your device doesn’t meet them, you’ll encounter upgrade errors. You’ll need to choose:

  • Buy a new PC that supports Windows 11
  • Purchase Extended Security Updates (ESU) from Microsoft (temporary fix only)
  • Migrate to another operating system like Linux (not realistic for most businesses)
  • Ignore the deadline and roll the dice (we do not recommend this!)

Pro tip: Whatever you choose, back up your data first. Always.

Extended Security Updates (ESU): A Band-Aid, Not a Cure

For businesses not yet ready to upgrade, Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates for Windows 10, but only for one year after support ends.

  • Cost: $30 or 1,000 Microsoft Reward points
  • Free option: Enable Windows Backup + OneDrive sync (limited to 5 GB unless you purchase storage)
  • Deadline: Must register before October 14, 2025

While ESU buys you some breathing room, it’s not a long-term solution. The smartest move is to treat it as a safety net while planning your full Windows 10 to Windows 11 migration.
